Eligibility/Criteria

Declared Journalism major
At least 3.0 GPA in the major as well as cumulative
Demonstrated Journalism ability
Strong career aspirations
Professional promise

Deadlines

Submit completed application packet to the School of Communications office, Crawford 320 by Noon

November 1st = Spring award (scholarship checks to be awarded in January)
April 1st = Fall award (Scholarship checks to be awarded in August)

Available Scholarships:

Pierre L. Bowman Memorial
Endowed in 1987 to honor Pierre Bowman, arts/theater reviewer and feature writer, the Honolulu Star Bulletin.

Special Notes/Requirements:
Demonstrated interest in culture and the arts; include an autobiographical statement. Biographical profile of Pierre L. Bowman, including his contribution to journalism.

Other considerations: National Student Exchange participant, Hawaiian or part-Hawaiian heritage.

Amount: Up to $1,500; Amounts are determined upon approval

James H. Couey Jr. Memorial
Established in 1972 by the Hawaii Publishers Association in honor of James Couey Jr., publisher of the Honolulu Star Bulletin from 1968 to 1971.

Special Notes/Requirements:
Must have completed at least two years at UH Manoa; autobiographical statement must accompany application. Biographical profile of James H. Couey, Jr., including his contribution to journalism.

Louise Hess Miller Travel Fund
To assist participation in student exchange and study abroad programs, and to support student travel to regional and national journalism and public relations conferences.

Pat Pitzer Memorial
Established in 1997 in memory of Pat Pitzer, writer and editor for 20 years with Honolulu Publishing.

Special Notes/Requirements:
Female students are encouraged to apply. A thoughtful, well-researched essay (700 - 1000 words) on the future of magazine writing. May have a Hawaii slant in exploring such aspects as travel writing, writing for entertainment or for educational purposes, but need not be limited to these subjects.

Eugene Tao Award
Endowed in 2000 by the Hawaii Tribune Herald to honor this long-time Big Island editor.

Special Notes/Requirements:
The Hawaii Tribune-Herald will also make a summer internship available in Hilo as part of this award. Big Island students are especially encouraged to apply.

Charles Ware Memorial
Established in 1996 to honor the late Charles A. Ware, who was a veteran newsman and ombudsman for The Honolulu Advertiser.

Special Notes/Requirements:
Demonstrated concern for ethics and responsibility in journalism. Must have at least one more semester before graduation. Biographical profile of Charles A. Ware, including his contribution to journalism.

Scripps League Newspapers Education
To assist full-time, declared Journalism majors

Special Notes/Requirements:
Demonstrated ability. Must be enrolled full-time with at least one more semester before graduation.

Carol Burnett Fund for Responsible Journalism
Endowed in 1981 by Actress Carol Burnett "to support teaching and research designed to further high standards of ethics and professionalism in journalism, and for awards to outstanding students who have demonstrated a strong sense of journalistic responsibility and integrity."
