Background: Dr. Ann Auman is a Professor at the University of Hawai’i where she teaches multimedia reporting, writing, editing, design and contemporary issues in journalism. She has conducted award-winning research on the organizational culture and identity of newspapers and journalists in a diverse context. Her research interests also include race, ethnicity and local identity in Hawai's media, the future of news media, and media in China. Before she became a professor, she worked for 10 years for newspapers and in TV in Canada, and in public relations. She has lived in China, Canada, Europe and Japan in addition to the U.S.

  • Publication Information: This paper examines the effect of China’s government education policy reform, adopted in 2001, on English-language magazines and periodicals for teaching English to young people. In this study, four of the most popular publications for teaching English to young people were analyzed over a 10-year time period. Three of the four adapted their formats and content, and one changed its name to Crazy English. The publications that succeeded were targeted to readers’ increasingly diversified needs and demands.
